15 iPhone Travel Hacks to Set Up Before Your Next Trip
Updated September 21, 2026 for iOS 27, including a new Safari Notify Me travel-price test.
Plenty of the travel apps people download before a trip are already built into the iPhone. The Calculator converts currency. Apple Maps gives directions with no signal. An eligible boarding pass can put a gate change on your Lock Screen. The trick is knowing what to set up before you need it.
Apple released iOS 27 on September 14, 2026. It adds several travel-friendly features, including Call Context for surfacing an airline confirmation code during a call and more flexible, timed location sharing.
Before you start: Tips marked New in iOS 27 require the iOS 27 update. The other tips already work on supported iPhones. Feature availability can also vary by device, language, airline, and region.
These are the 15 iPhone travel settings and shortcuts I’d check before a trip, grouped by when you’ll actually use them.
New after release: I’ve also added a bonus iOS 27 Safari trick for monitoring hotel prices, because it turned out to be too useful to leave out.

Before you leave home
1. Download languages for offline translation
Translation apps matter most in the places with the weakest signal: subway platforms, rural bus stops, or the market two streets back from the main square. Download your languages while you’re still on home Wi-Fi.
For Apple’s Translate app, go to Settings > Apps > Translate > Languages and download the languages you’ll need. Apple also offers an On-Device Mode if you want translation to stay on the phone. Once the needed languages are downloaded, Translate can work without an internet connection.
If you use Google Translate, download its offline language packs too. Google recommends doing that on Wi-Fi, and having a second translation app can be useful when a phrase doesn’t look quite right.
2. Save offline maps for each stop on your route
Open Apple Maps, tap your profile picture, choose Offline Maps, and download the area you’re visiting. With a map saved, your iPhone can still show place details such as hours and ratings, estimated arrival times, and turn-by-turn directions for driving, walking, cycling, or transit where supported.
iOS 27 also adds an enhanced Flyover experience for select cities, combining aerial imagery with AI for sharper detail. That’s more useful while you’re connected, but it can be a good way to size up a neighborhood before you book a hotel or head out exploring.
3. Turn the Calculator into a currency converter
Open Calculator, tap the mode button, and switch on Convert. Tap the unit names to choose Currency, then pick the two currencies you need. Every number you type converts as you go, which is handy for checking a restaurant bill or a price tag at a glance.
Calculator can continue using its last-downloaded exchange-rate data when you’re offline, so it can still be useful in airplane mode. Check the rate’s update time and reconnect before a large purchase. Also remember that your card issuer, ATM, hotel, or exchange counter may use a different rate or add fees.
4. Add your U.S. passport to Apple Wallet as a Digital ID
If you have an unexpired U.S. passport, you can create a Digital ID from it in Apple Wallet on a compatible iPhone. At select TSA checkpoints in more than 250 U.S. airports, you can present that Digital ID by holding your iPhone or Apple Watch near the identity reader.
The important limit: a passport-based Digital ID is for domestic identity verification. It is not a replacement for a physical passport and cannot be used for international travel or border crossings. I would still carry a physical ID as backup when flying.
5. Pack an AirTag in your checked bag
Slip an AirTag inside your suitcase and you can see its location in Find My. If the airline misplaces the bag, open Find My, select the AirTag, and choose Share Item Location. That creates a temporary link you can give to the airline’s baggage team.
Apple says it now works directly with more than 50 airlines that accept Share Item Location links. The link turns off when you’re reunited with the item, can be stopped manually, and automatically expires after seven days.
If you’re comparing options first, see our luggage tracker guide.

At the airport
6. Turn your boarding pass into a live flight tracker
Add an eligible boarding pass to Apple Wallet from your airline’s app, email, or check-in message. Participating airlines can support a much richer boarding-pass experience than the old static QR code:
- Real-time flight updates can appear as a Live Activity on your Lock Screen.
- The pass can link into Apple Maps for airport navigation and useful airport or destination information.
- You can share the flight’s Live Activity with another iPhone user so they can follow your flight status.
- Find My can be available from the pass for tracking important items and reporting a missing bag.
Apple initially rolled the refreshed experience out with airlines including Delta, JetBlue, Southwest, United, American, Air Canada, Qantas, Lufthansa Group, and others, but the exact features depend on the boarding pass your airline issues.
7. Let Call Context find your confirmation number (new in iOS 27)
Flight cancelled and calling the airline to rebook? In iOS 27, Call Context can proactively surface relevant information from your apps when you call a business. Apple’s own example is a confirmation code from Mail appearing when you call an airline, so you don’t have to hunt through your inbox while you’re talking to an agent.
Call Context uses Apple Intelligence. That means you’ll need an Apple Intelligence-compatible iPhone: iPhone 15 Pro or 15 Pro Max, or an iPhone 16 model or later. It also requires a supported language, and availability varies by region.
Once you land
8. Point your camera at menus and signs
Open Apple’s Translate app, tap Camera, and aim at a menu, sign, or ticket machine. The translation appears over the original text, making it much easier to match each line to what’s in front of you.
With iOS 27, Siri mode in the Camera app gives compatible Apple Intelligence iPhones another way to understand what you’re pointing at. That’s useful for travel situations such as flyers, museum signs, and posters where you may want more than a straight word-for-word translation.
9. Use Live Translation for real conversations
Live Translation can turn supported AirPods into a personal interpreter. With AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation, AirPods Pro 2, or AirPods Pro 3, press and hold the stem on both AirPods at the same time. AirPods Max 2 use the listening-mode button instead.
AirPods Live Translation requires an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone running iOS 26 or later, plus current AirPods firmware. Apple notes that language and regional availability varies, and important translations should still be checked for accuracy.
You don’t need AirPods for every Live Translation feature. Translation is also built into Messages, FaceTime, and Phone, which can help when you’re texting a rental host or calling a restaurant.
10. Sign in to hotel Wi-Fi once
Hotel, airport, and café Wi-Fi often sends you through a captive sign-in page. On iOS 26 and iPadOS 26, Apple devices can sync sign-in details for supported captive Wi-Fi networks, so a second device may offer to reuse information you’ve already entered instead of making you start over.
I wouldn’t count on it at every hotel — captive portals vary — but when it works, it’s one less arrival-day annoyance.
11. Save museum passes and loyalty cards to Wallet (new in iOS 27)
iOS 27 adds Create a Pass to Apple Wallet. You can point Siri mode in Camera at a physical card with a barcode, use a screenshot of a digital card, or create a pass directly in Wallet. Once saved, the barcode or QR code can be presented from your iPhone or Apple Watch.
It’s a natural fit for museum memberships, loyalty cards, and tickets that don’t already offer an Apple Wallet version. Payment cards, government IDs, transit cards, and hotel room keys still use their dedicated Wallet/provider flows. At participating hotels, iOS 27’s enhanced hotel-key experience can also surface trip details, booked activities, and hotel services.
12. Collect everyone’s trip photos in one album (new in iOS 27)
iCloud Shared Albums get a meaningful upgrade in iOS 27. Apple says they support full-resolution sharing, more file types, and temporary albums that don’t take up space in your iCloud storage. Friends without an Apple device can also join and contribute photos on the web, which makes one shared album much more practical for a mixed-device travel group.
Staying connected and safe
Two travel-tech problems deserve a little more preparation than a quick iPhone trick: choosing between a travel eSIM, local SIM and carrier roaming, and making sure you can recover if your phone is lost or stolen abroad.
13. Share your location for exactly as long as the trip (new in iOS 27)
Find My in iOS 27 lets you share your location for a custom number of minutes, hours, or days, or until a date and time you choose. Set it to end the evening you fly home, and family can follow along during the trip without anyone having to remember to switch sharing off later.
14. Tell iCloud Photos to prioritize today’s uploads (new in iOS 27)
iCloud Photos can sometimes delay uploads to save battery or cellular data, or because of network conditions. In iOS 27, open Photos > Collections, tap your iCloud profile at the top, then choose Sync Immediately > For Today. Photos prioritizes items added to your library after you turn it on, and the setting automatically turns off after one day.
This is one I’d use before a photo-heavy sightseeing day. If your phone gets lost, stolen, damaged, or drowned somewhere along the way, you’re giving today’s photos a better chance of already being in iCloud. The tradeoff is more battery and potentially more cellular data. Sync Immediately pauses if Low Power Mode or Low Data Mode is enabled.
15. Practice texting by satellite before you need it
On iPhone 14 and later, Messages via satellite lets you text friends and family when you’re outside cellular and Wi-Fi coverage in the U.S., Canada, Mexico, and Japan. It’s worth trying the demo before a hiking trip or a long drive through a remote area. Go to Settings > Apps > Messages and tap Satellite Connection Demo to practice connecting to a satellite.
Important: Messages via satellite is not the emergency feature. If you need emergency services when you have no cellular or Wi-Fi coverage, use Emergency SOS via satellite.
Bonus iOS 27 travel hack: Let Safari watch the price for you
Use Notify Me for hotel prices and availability

Safari’s new Notify Me feature can periodically check a webpage for the change you care about and alert you if it happens. For travel, the obvious use is a hotel, tour, attraction, or other booking page where you’re waiting for a better price or for availability to open up.
Open the page in Safari, tap the Page Menu, choose Notify Me, and describe exactly what you want Safari to watch for. In my test, I pulled up the Westin in Fort Lauderdale on Hotels.com at $149 per night and told Safari, “Notify me if the price of the Westin drops below $125 per night.” Safari then scheduled the next check automatically.
This isn’t a real-time ticket sniper: the shortest checking interval is currently hourly, so I wouldn’t rely on it for something that can sell out in minutes. But for hotel rates, airfare pages, tour availability, and other changes that move over hours or days, it can save a lot of repetitive checking.
Compatibility: Notify Me uses Apple Intelligence, so it requires an Apple Intelligence-compatible iPhone, currently iPhone 15 Pro or iPhone 15 Pro Max, or an iPhone 16 model or later. Apple Intelligence availability also varies by language and region.

iPhone travel tips FAQ
Which iPhone travel features work without internet?
Downloaded translation languages and offline Apple Maps work without a regular internet connection. Calculator can keep converting currency from its last-downloaded rate data, although you should check how fresh that rate is. On iPhone 14 and later, Messages via satellite can work in supported countries when there’s no cellular or Wi-Fi coverage. Live flight updates and other real-time services still need data.
When is iOS 27 available?
Apple released iOS 27 on September 14, 2026. On a compatible iPhone, go to Settings > General > Software Update to check for the update.
Which iPhones support Live Translation, Siri mode, and Call Context?
The Apple Intelligence features in this article require iPhone 15 Pro or iPhone 15 Pro Max, or an iPhone 16 model or later. Some individual features also have language, region, AirPods, or firmware requirements.
Can I use an Apple Wallet Digital ID for international flights?
No. A Digital ID created from a U.S. passport can be used at select TSA checkpoints for domestic identity verification, but it is not a replacement for your physical passport and cannot be used for international travel or border crossings.
Do airlines actually use AirTag location links?
Yes. Apple says it has partnered directly with more than 50 airlines to accept Share Item Location links from Find My. The link can be stopped at any time and automatically expires after seven days.
Set it all up the night before
Most of these take a minute or two, but language packs and offline maps are much easier to download on home Wi-Fi than at the airport. If you have a compatible iPhone, install iOS 27 before your trip so the newer features are ready when you need them.
